Established in 1981, the North Carolina Biotechnology Center is the world’s first government-sponsored biotechnology center. The Center is a state-funded, non-profit organization that provides long-term economic and societal benefits to North Carolina by supporting biotechnology research, business and education statewide. Its efforts have helped North Carolina become the third leading state in America for biotechnology, according to Ernst & Young.
The Center’s 50-member staff works toward six goals:
1. Strengthen North Carolina's academic and industrial biotechnology research capabilities.
2. Foster North Carolina's biotechnology industrial development.
3. Work with business, government and academia to move biotechnology from research to commercialization in North Carolina.
4. Inform North Carolinians about the science, applications, benefits and issues of biotechnology.
5. Enhance the teaching and workforce-training capabilities of North Carolina's educational institutions.
6. Establish North Carolina as a preeminent international location for the biotechnology industry.
The Center does not conduct laboratory research but carries out a variety of programs and activities that strengthen North Carolina’s biotechnology infrastructure and help move the technology from the laboratory to the marketplace.
At the request of Governor Mike Easley the Center led the development of a statewide strategic plan for growing North Carolina’s biotechnology industry. The plan includes 54 recommendations for strengthening biotechnology research, business, education and workforce training. The plan, New Jobs Across North Carolina, is available on the Center’s Web site.
