Moorfields Pharmaceuticals produces one of the widest ranges of ophthalmic Named Patient Medicines available in the UK. Named Patient Medicines, also known as Specials, are unlicensed medicines that are prescribed to patients on an individual basis to treat a specific clinical condition.

The categories of Named Patient Medicines available from Moorfields Pharmaceuticals include: 

• Corticosteroids: These are anti-inflammatory steroids, which can be produced with or without preservatives. Ideal for conditions where a tapering dose is required.

• Anti-infectives: Antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, antiseptic disinfectants and anti-amoebics.

• Myotics: A range of cholinergic products; used for the diagnosis of Holmes-Adie syndrome and the treatment of glaucoma.

• Mydriatics: A group of anticholinergics and sympathomimetics. Used in surgical procedures or in out-patient clinics for examination purposes, mydriatics dilate the pupil. Sympathomimetics are also used for the diagnosis of Homer’s Syndrome.

Preservative Free Products

One of the main benefits of preservative free drugs, especially sterile pharmaceutical liquids for the eyes, is that there is no risk of preservatives having an adverse effect on the patient. Preservatives themselves can cause irritation in some patients, which negates the benefits of an ophthalmic medicine.
