TRACP 5b Assays (Tartrate-resistant Acid Phosphatase 5b)

Immunodiagnostic Systems

TRACP 5 & TRACP 5b – What is the difference?

TRACP 5 assays detect Tartrate-Resistant Acid Phosphatase released from macrophages (TRACP 5a) and osteoclasts (TRACP 5b) whereas the BoneTRAP Assay employs a highly specific monoclonal that detects only active enzyme released from viable osteoclasts.

Approximately 90% of circulating TRACP is in the 5a isoform, therefore it is important to use a method which is specific for osteoclast-derived TRACP 5b when assessing bone resorption.

Tartrate-Resistant Acid Phosphatase Assay

BoneTRAP Assay (TRACP 5b)

  • Measures specifically osteoclast-derived TRACP 5b and correlates with osteoclast number.
  • Detects only enzymatically active TRACP 5b molecules freshly released from osteoclasts.14
  • No interference from enzymatically active TRAP 5a molecules or circulating inactive TRACP fragments.14
  • Low diurnal variability, no dietary influences, and no accumulation in renal or hepatic failure.
  • Also available as MouseTRAP™ Assay (mouse) and RatTRAP™ Assay (rat) formats.
  • More than 100 publications documenting scientific principles and applications.
  • Patented TRACP 5b technology.
  • BoneTRAP assays have been used for investigation into:
    • Detecting the spread of tumour cells to bone in cancer research subjects
    • Detecting increased bone resorption rate in subjects with bone diseases such as osteoporosis and renal bone disease
    • Assessing the efficacy of anti-resorptive treatment
    • Quantitating bone resorption and osteoclast number in human, rat and mouse osteoclast cultures
    • Fracture Risk
