Storage tank types and industries they are used in, such as Fire Water Tanks, Dry Storage Tanks, Water Storage Tanks, Containment Tanks, Filter Tanks, Roofs & Domes for Tanks.

Although many storage tanks look the same, not all of them are used for the same purpose. We at American Structures, Inc. are experienced in the following tank types:

Fire Water Tanks
Fire Water tanks are used to store water, which later can be used for fire protection and/ or a combination of lawn care and restroom water. Usually these tanks store raw water, which is intake water prior to any treatment or use.

Dry Storage Tanks
Dry storage includes silos for substances like, corn, sugar, grain, gravel, etc.

Water Storage Tanks
These tanks include storage options, such as reservoir tanks, day storage tanks and information about standpipes. Water storage tanks come in many different sizes and like most of American Structures’ tanks, are customized to customer needs. Water storage is needed in areas with scarce water resources, i.e. dry and arid regions.

A water reservoir is any natural or artificial holding area used to store, regulate, or control water. Generally, reservoirs have a greater diameter than height, and standpipes have a greater height than diameter.

These tanks usually hold potable water, water that is safe for drinking and cooking. Similar to the other storage options common applications for standpipes are municipal and rural potable water storage as well as industrial process water and fire protection water storage. If a standpipe is welded it can also be used for storing certain liquid chemicals.

Containment Tanks
Containment tanks, i.e. leachate storage tanks, contain leachate from landfills. Leachate is defined as water that collects contaminants as it trickles through wastes, pesticides or fertilizers. Leaching may occur in farming areas, feedlots, and landfills, and may result in hazardous substances entering surface water, ground water, or soil.

Waste Water
Wastewater is the spent or used water from a home, community, farm, or industry that contains dissolved or suspended matter.

Like most of American Structures’ tanks wastewater tanks (sludge storage tanks) come in many different sizes and specifications.

Another type of wastewater tank is a clarifier tank. In a clarifier tank solids settle to the bottom and are subsequently removed as sludge. During a water treatment process, solids are allowed to settle out of the wastewater in the clarifiers. These solids are clumps of bacteria and organic materials (activated sludge). Activated sludge is removed from the bottom of the clarifiers and either returned to the oxidation ditches or sent to the digesters for further processing.

An aeration tank is a chamber used to inject air into water. Similar to clarifiers it also is used in water treatment processes. Lastly there are equalization tanks. Wastewater is held in equalization tanks to allow solids to begin settling. Activated sludge from leveling ponds is mixed with the wastewater in equalization tanks to begin biological digestion of organic contaminants.

Methane Generator
Methane Generators create methane, a colorless, nonpoisonous, flammable gas created by anaerobic decomposition of organic compounds.

Digesters
Digesters used in wastewater treatment are closed tanks. In solid-waste conversion, digesters are a unit in which bacterial action is induced and accelerated in order to break down organic matter and establish the proper carbon to nitrogen ratio. There are Aerobic and Anaerobic Digesters. Aerobic is defined as a life or process that requires, or is not destroyed by, the presence of oxygen.

Anaerobic is defined as a life or process that occurs in, or is not destroyed by, the absence of oxygen. Digesters are used for aerobic treatment, a process by which microbes decompose complex organic compounds in the presence of oxygen and use the liberated energy for reproduction and growth. (Such processes include extended aeration, trickling filtration, and rotating biological contactors.)

Filter Tank
Filter tanks harbor filter machinery (not provided by American Structures, Inc.), which are used to restore water quality by trickling water down through several layers of filter media.

Filtration is a treatment process, under the control of qualified operators, for removing solid (particulate) matter from water by means of porous media such as sand or a man-made filter; often used to remove particles that contain pathogens.

Roofs & Domes for Tanks
American Structures, Inc. also fabricates roofs and domes. There are a variety of roof designs available today. Roofs for welded tanks can include conical, toriconical, umbrella, dome, and ellipsoidal designs. Some of these roofs are column supported while others are self-supporting. Bolted stainless steel tanks, are often outfitted with conical roofs or alternatively with aluminum geodesic domes.

When it comes to tanks, usage spreads over a variety of industries. Depending on the tank specifications, tanks can be used in the water and wastewater industry. Furthermore tanks are used in the food and food processing industry. You can find tanks in breweries, wineries, on diary farms, and in the cheese business.

Tanks are also very important for fire suppression in remote areas or in buildings that require special fire safety precautions.

You see if it comes to storage tanks it is not all-plain vanilla!
