Designed specifically to use alongside its renowned PlusPak™ concordance support packaging - now used in more than 3,000 pharmacies across the UK - OnDemand can fill, seal and label one complete seven-day multi-dose prescription pack every one minute 15 seconds. This is typically around seven to eight times faster than a dispensing assistant would take.
"It is not just speed," explains managing director of MTS, Peter Williams. "Automation devices such as Multi-Dose OnDemand also hugely increase accuracy of the fill, ensuring patients receive accurate treatment as prescribed. There is also technical opportunity for the system to accept instruction from an electronic format of prescription.
"This model of OnDemand, which we displayed at BPC, is a smaller version of the systems currently in-situ in numerous pharmacies in the US which are dealing with high-volume dispensing to pharmacies serving nursing homes.
"We know the demand for concordance support packaging such as the PlusPak™ is increasing - we've already identified a 50% increase in demand in the last 12 months. We have an ever-ageing population and pharmacists are under increasing pressure to be able to provide such services. But, as demand increases, so do the time constraints placed on pharmacists and technicians managing these services.
"We believe this will lead to more centralised automation within UK pharmacy chains - a development which is going to be significant over the next few years. Products which can cope with such a high turnaround of packs, such as OnDemand, and which can also improve accuracy will become increasingly sought after."
