An overview of the medication dispensing and electronic medication tracking system from MTS Medication Technologies
Out Of Hours Scenario
- The patient is unwell and the doctor is called out
- The doctor prescribes an item that is required urgently which is on the hospital's or PCT's formulary
- This prescription is communicated to the pharmacist
- The pharmacist has the option to make only this prescribed medication available at the facility. This feature is called PATIENT PROFILING
- The pharmacist validates the item against his copy of the patient's prescription record (if available)
- Once validated, the doctor or nurse selects the drug from the patient specific list of medications set by the pharmacist rather than the full MedLocker™ inventory. They undertake the MedLocker™ transaction shown overleaf and the patient quickly receives their first dose of treatment. The entire process has been electronically tracked
How It Works
- MedLocker™ is locked

- Log into the system
- Select the patient

- Select the drug then click on "Administer"
- Select the doctor, confirm the pre-configured dose and click on "Administer"

- The door is unlocked and opened
- A green led indicates the correct location of the drug to be removed

- The card is removed from the MedLocker™ and the barcode scanned (the led turns yellow after removal)
- The item (or unit-dose) is removed from the card and the card replaced into the slot indicated by the yellow led.

- Close the door
- The system locks
MedLocker™ has captured an electronic audit of:
- The patient receiving the medication
- The medication administered
- The doctor prescribing the medication
- The doctor or nurse administering the medication
- The date and time of the event
Thus providing TRACEABILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY
MedLockerTM lights up the correct card slot to identify the exact drug location. SCANNING A BARCODE confirms the correct medication has been removed
If the incorrect medication is taken, MedLockerTM provides an alert on-screen and to the Pharmacy system. THIS REDUCES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR MEDICATION ERRORS
The use of barcode scanning is one of the key routes to improved PATIENT SAFETY
