High-Throughput Technology and Rational Screening Approach

Avantium Technologies

Avantium offers a range of services based on its unique high-throughput technology and rational screening approach.

The benefits of our high-throughput approach are greater speed than conventional R&D methods, resulting in faster time-to-market, an increased research output, improved probability of success, and the possibility of unexpected results because of the larger experimental space we cover. Our rational approach means we ensure a maximum return on our customers' R&D investment. We focus on carrying out relevant experiments on equipment that has been developed to ensure reproducible and scalable results.

Working with Avantium provides access to one of the world's most advanced R&D laboratories on a contractual basis. We recognize that capturing intellectual property rights on catalysts, products and processes is essential for our customers. Our starting point is thus that the intellectual property around the chemistry and process generated during the program belongs to our customer. In order to align technical and business drivers, risk and reward sharing can be part of the deal structure.

High Throughput ApproachAvantium has the multidisciplinary skill-set, strong technology base and customer-oriented business approach required to provide the solutions our customers are looking for. This high-level expertise is fully at their disposal during collaborative programs. These programs can range from specific screening campaigns to fully integrated long-term collaborations.

Avantium has developed a range of high-throughput technology platforms to address a variety of chemical R&D applications, such as catalyst screening, process development and solid state chemistry. In strategic collaborations, Avantium provides these technology platforms to customers' R&D laboratories during contract research projects to evaluate how Avantium's technology can create value for their R&D infrastructure.

Although high-throughput screening is commonly used in process development across the industry, there has been some skepticism about just how relevant high-throughput experimentation is. Avantium realized quickly that what was needed was a more rational approach.

High Throughput ScreeningThe rational approach entails careful consideration of descriptive properties of the system, such as the shape and polarizability of the solvent, for example, and how it influences the chemistry of the reaction or the crystallization behavior of the compound. Using such methods, it is possible to narrow down the number of variables but at the same time increase the relevance to produce a more finely tuned screen - for example instead of looking at hundreds of solvents and solvent combinations it is possible to only consider several tens which would probably be sufficient to represent the range of properties of interest.

Avantium uses this approach to identify the right catalysts, reaction processes or required crystal forms and spends a lot of time developing descriptor databases and fine-tuning the application of predictive modeling.
