Tyco Healthcare is a global leader within the healthcare industry, operating in more than 100 countries.
Within the UK they deliver solutions to both NHS and private hospitals, providing equipment to sustain and improve the lives of patients. Tyco Healthcare is also involved in initiatives to reduce NHS waiting lists and it support local healthcare projects and aid UNICEF health programmes in developing countries.
Based in Gosport, Tyco Healthcare required an instrument to measure the flow rate of dripping acetone, the sterilent used to coat stitches. The previous manual system of filling a cylinder of known volume with the acetone using a stopwatch was both time-consuming and labour-intensive.
This system also resulted in erratic flow readings and alarm states. The main problem with installing a new system was finding a flowmeter capable of measuring such low flow rates (0.75-2.1 ml/min).
Endress+Hauser stood out as the only company that had a flowmeter capable of measuring this application.
The solution was found in Endress+Hauser's Promass 83A Coriolis mass flow measuring system and in total six units were supplied.
As a guide, Promass 83 can measure as little as 100g/hr and the single-tube system provides high measurement accuracy, even with minimal flow rates.
The Promass 83A measures, quite literally, drip by drip! They were used in conjunction with a Memograph S recorder and wall-mounted panel enclosure and this allowed the customer to automate what was a manual, time-consuming process.
John Towers, Maintenance Manager, said: "Endress+Hauser has provided a solution which gives our operators confidence in both the process and the flow readings, which has resulted in improved productivity and efficiency."
