Drug delivery: controlled release of biopharmaceuticals

Biopharmaceuticals play a major role in today’s therapeutic field.

However, they pose significant drug delivery problems such as instability, efficacy and short half-life. The drug delivery of biopharmaceuticals can be improved by applying controlled release technologies based on polymeric systems, such as the technologies of OctoPlus.

The advantages that can be gained by these technologies include:

  • Optimized pharmacokinetic profile (prevention of peak plasma concentrations);
  • Reduced injection frequency;
  • and possibly a safer and more efficacious therapy.

OctoPlus' controlled delivery systems encapsulate the active ingredient in a microsphere formed by the drug delivery polymer. After subcutaneous or intramuscular injection the polymer slowly degrades, releasing the drug gradually. An additional advantage might be protection of the (labile) drug against degradation.

OctoPlus has developed a number of proprietary drug delivery systems that facilitate controlled release for all classes of injectable compounds.

OctoDEX™: a dextran-based microsphere delivery technology for proteins and particulate systems. The system is also suitable for larger structures such as liposomes and cells, and shows promise for single-shot vaccine delivery.
