Cardiovascular disease and Practical Cardiovascular Risk Management

Medical Education Partnership (MEP Ltd)

Cardiovascular disease is the single biggest cause of mortality in the UK, accounting for close to 40% of all deaths recorded in the year 2000.

Cardiovascular Risk ManagementAt a time when some countries are seeing a significant fall in death rates from cardiovascular disease, the UK appears to lag behind. One might question why this is so, given the massive weight of unequivocal evidence that has accrued in recent years demonstrating the effectiveness of multiple cardiovascular risk factor intervention with treatments that include both lifestyle modifications and pharmacotherapy.

For too many years, hypertension experts have concentrated only on hypertension, diabetologists on glycaemia, lipid experts on lipids, cardiologists on invasive cardiology and so on. There is now increasing recognition that a multifaceted, multiprofessional and multi-interventional approach needs to be taken to improve prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, particularly since multiple cardiovascular risk factors are often present in the same individual.

Practical Cardiovascular Risk Management is a quarterly journal, launched in January 2003, for general practitioners, nurses and other health professionals working in cardiovascular risk management.

Sponsored by an unrestricted education grant from Servier Laboratories Ltd, Practical Cardiovascular Risk Management offers practical guidance on cardiovascular management through accurate and up-to-date referenced material, presented in an easily read format. The journal brings together the evidence now available for cardiovascular risk intervention and its overall management, with a view to helping the multiprofessional team implement strategies to reduce cardiovascular disease.

Editorial Board

The editorial board of Practical Cardiovascular Risk Management is made up of practising clinicians who have expertise and a major interest in cardiovascular management. We also draw on the expertise of many other health professionals in the UK and internationally.
