Shobha Parthasarathi Joins Biotech Center As Technology Development Director

Biopharmaceutical research leader helps convert research into products, jobs

Technology Development Director

Shobha Parthasarathi, Ph.D., has joined the North Carolina Biotechnology Center as Technology Development Director in the Business and Technology Development unit.   

Before joining the Biotechnology Center, Parthasarathi was a senior researcher and manager at Millennium Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge,Mass., where she conducted drug discovery research, evaluated technologies and developed in-house expertise for multiple therapeutic groups.

"We are delighted to add her skills and expertise to our organization as we reach out to help more young companies across the state turn their ideas into commercial successes - and good jobs."

Shobha ParthasarathiParthasarathi succeeds Rob Lindberg, Ph.D., R.A.C., who has become director of the Biotechnology Center's BATON startup-business-support program - also part of the Business and Technology Development unit.

Parthasarathi has extensive experience working with multi-disciplinary groups in academia, industry and government and has held leadership roles in both for-profit and non-profit organizations. She served as education liaison for the Pennsylvania Cancer Control Consortium, where she reviewed legislation, funding and issues of interest to the cancer education community, and also served on the board of directors of the Wissahickon Educational Opportunities Foundation in Pennsylvania.

Biotechnology Research

She received her Ph.D. in molecular genetics and microbiology from Rutgers University/University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and an M.S. degree in medical microbiology and B.S. in botany (zoology and chemistry) from the University of Madras, India. 

Her research in retroviral genetics, gene expression and cell signaling, G protein-coupled receptor biology, cell-based assays and high-throughput screening has been published in several articles and abstracts. She also holds a certificate in biotechnology project management from the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council.

The Biotechnology Center is a private, non-profit corporation supported by the N.C. General Assembly. Its mission is to provide long-term economic and societal benefits to North Carolina by supporting biotechnology research, business and education statewide.
