The new Up/Down Microscope allows researchers to view specimens using several modalities simultaneously or sequentially. It is beneficial in many instances where they would otherwise require two systems, with relocation of the specimen from one microscope frame to another, or where they want to image two different areas of the specimen simultaneously.
Designed for use with multiple cameras and accessories, the Up/Down microscope allows the sample to be viewed at two different focal planes at the same time, using different techniques. Now the dorsal and ventral surfaces of a neuron can be imaged (or stimulated) at the same time. Also, the optical axis of the upright portion can be offset from the inverted microscope axis; for instance, photo-activation "upstream" of the area being imaged is now easily possible.
"By placing an upright microscope above the inverted microscope, researchers get two microscopes in one efficient footprint," said Nicolas George, product manager for the Olympus America Inc., Scientific Equipment Group. "The system is ideal for people doing two techniques simultaneously on the same field, such as scientists doing TIRF microscopy on the bottom and electrophysiology with water dipping on top."
The Up/Down microscope is designed for use with Slidebook™ software.
